Writing can be a lonely business, but when you find the right kind of advice at the right time it can help you avoid pitfalls and streamline the process of finding success; whether that be increasing the skills of your craft, understanding more about the publishing industry, or hearing other author’s experiences on the rocky road to publication. It can also help you find your tribe – a group of like-minded people who can cheer you on along the way.

  • Writers Edit – Great articles and practical tips for getting your writing done.
  • Australian Writers Centre – They run fantastic courses (online and in Australian capital cities). They also run monthly competitions and have an excellent podcast called ‘So You Want To Be A Writer’
  • The Garret – A podcast where authors talk about their writing process.
  • Australian Writers Resource – A list of competitions (Australian and International) including word count, theme and entry fee. There are competitions for school children as well, so younger writers take note.
  • Write Angles Critique Group – A supportive online Facebook group for writers of picture books and middle grade where participants post once story a month and critique three or four others in a small group. Positive, welcoming, this is a great place to get feedback on your work before sending it to a publisher if you are a children’s writer.
  • The Creative Penn – Joanna Penn is a bestselling author. She has a podcast and creates YouTube videos brimming with practical advice and great conversations with fellow authors. She talks about writing process, self-publishing, marketing, AI, emerging technologies for writers and how to your work published.
  • Jane Friedman – If you are looking for expert advice on the publishing industry and the business side of writing then look no further.
  • One More Page – an incredible podcast full of laughs and fun, as well as kidlit treasures with book recommendations and interviews with authors. Though the podcast finished in 2022, it’s still definitely worth a listen.
